Geographic country information

A country, or sovereign state, is a political territory with its own government, defined borders and population. Geographic country information is the body of factual data that describes each nation: its location and physical landscape, its people and how they live, and the symbols and institutions that distinguish it. Such information is the foundation of geography and is widely used in education, travel, research and international affairs.

The data describing a country falls into several categories. Physical geography covers its size, terrain, climate, rivers, mountains and coastlines, and its position on the map relative to neighbouring states, oceans and continents. Human geography describes the population — how many people live there, how they are distributed between cities and countryside, and the languages, cultures and religions present. Political and economic information records the system of government, the capital city, the currency, and the main economic activities, while national symbols such as the flag and emblem identify the state. Maps and atlases bring much of this together visually.

Reliable country information is gathered by national statistical offices, censuses and international organisations, and is published in atlases, encyclopedias and reference databases such as country factbooks. Because populations, economies and even borders can change over time, this data is updated periodically. Comparing such figures across nations — areas, populations, capitals and flags — is a common way to study the diversity of the world's countries.

Frequently asked questions

What information typically describes a country?
It includes physical features such as area and terrain, human details such as population and language, and political facts such as the capital, government, currency and flag.
Where does country data come from?
It is compiled by national censuses and statistical offices and by international organisations, then published in atlases, encyclopedias and factbook databases.
Why does country information change over time?
Populations grow or shrink, economies develop, governments change and borders are occasionally redrawn, so reference data must be updated periodically.
