Environment and Ecology
Ecology is the branch of biology that studies how living organisms interact with one another and with their physical surroundings. These interactions take place within ecosystems, communities of plants, animals, and microorganisms together with the air, water, soil, and climate they depend on. Energy from the sun flows through ecosystems as plants capture it and animals consume plants and each other, while nutrients such as carbon and nitrogen cycle repeatedly between living things and their environment.
The wider study of the environment also examines how human activity alters natural systems. Pollution is a central concern: substances released into the air, water, or soil can harm organisms and disrupt the balance of ecosystems. Water pollution and the treatment of waste water, the release of harmful gases into the atmosphere, and the accumulation of contaminants are all studied so that their effects can be understood and reduced. Ecological change driven by human pressures can reduce the variety of life an area supports.
Among the largest environmental issues is climate change. The greenhouse effect, in which certain gases in the atmosphere trap heat, is a natural process that keeps the Earth warm enough for life, but rising emissions of greenhouse gases from human activity are strengthening this effect and driving global warming. Studying the climate system, tracking emissions, and weighing the impacts guide efforts to protect the environment and respond to these changes. Conservation aims to safeguard ecosystems and the services they provide.
Frequently asked questions
- What is ecology?
- Ecology is the study of how living things interact with each other and with their physical environment, including the flow of energy and the cycling of nutrients through ecosystems.
- What is an ecosystem?
- An ecosystem is a community of organisms together with the air, water, soil, and climate they depend on, all linked by the exchange of energy and materials.
- How does pollution affect the environment?
- Pollutants released into air, water, or soil can harm organisms and upset the balance of ecosystems, reducing the variety of life an area can support.
