World History
World history is the study of the human past across all regions and eras, tracing how societies arose, interacted and changed. It draws on written records, archaeology and anthropology to reconstruct events, social structures and ways of life, and it uses tools such as historical maps to show how territories, trade routes and empires shifted over time. Rather than focusing on a single nation, world history looks for connections, comparisons and broad patterns linking different parts of the globe.
The earliest complex civilisations developed where agriculture could support large populations, notably in Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates, in Egypt along the Nile, and later in Persia, Israel and surrounding regions. These societies produced writing, cities, law codes and organised religion. In the Mediterranean, the city-states of ancient Greece and the later Hellenistic world spread their language, art and ideas widely, while Rome built a vast empire that linked Europe, North Africa and the Near East under common law and infrastructure.
The decline of Roman authority in the West opened the period known as Late Antiquity, a time of transformation that bridged the ancient and medieval worlds. Across Eurasia, long-distance exchange along routes such as the Silk Road carried goods, technologies and beliefs between China and the Mediterranean, while movements of peoples such as the Vikings reshaped regions far from their homelands. Studying these developments, including the so-called lost empires that flourished and then faded, helps explain the origins of modern institutions, languages and borders.
Frequently asked questions
- Where did the first civilisations arise?
- Some of the earliest complex societies developed in Mesopotamia, along the Nile in Egypt, and in nearby regions such as Persia. Reliable agriculture there allowed cities, writing and organised states to form.
- What was the Silk Road?
- The Silk Road was a network of trade routes linking China with Central Asia, the Near East and the Mediterranean. It carried not only goods such as silk but also technologies, ideas and religions between distant cultures.
- What is meant by Late Antiquity?
- Late Antiquity is the transitional period following the decline of Roman power in the West. It connects the ancient and medieval worlds and saw major political, religious and cultural change across Europe and the Near East.
