World War II
World War II was the largest and deadliest conflict in history, fought from 1939 to 1945. It pitted the Allied powers, including the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, the United States and many others, against the Axis powers, chiefly Germany, Italy and Japan. The war in Europe began when Germany, under Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland in September 1939, prompting Britain and France to declare war. Fighting eventually spread across Europe, North Africa, the Atlantic and the vast Pacific.
The early years saw rapid German conquests across much of Europe, followed by the Battle of Britain in the air and the German invasion of the Soviet Union. In the Pacific, Japan's attack on the American base at Pearl Harbor in 1941 brought the United States fully into the war. Several battles proved to be turning points, including the fighting on the Eastern Front and the naval Battle of Midway in the Pacific. In 1944 the Allies launched the Normandy landings in occupied France, opening a major front in Western Europe.
The war ended in 1945. Germany was defeated as Allied armies advanced from west and east and captured Berlin, bringing the surrender in Europe in May. The war in the Pacific ended that summer after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Japan surrendered. The conflict caused tens of millions of deaths, including the systematic murder of millions in the Holocaust, and reshaped the world order, leaving the United States and the Soviet Union as rival superpowers.
