I2C and I2S Bus Systems

I2C and I2S are two serial communication standards widely used inside electronic equipment to move data between integrated circuits. Although their names are similar, they serve different purposes: I2C is a general-purpose control bus for connecting chips on a circuit board, while I2S is a dedicated bus for carrying digital audio. Both were originally developed by Philips and are now found across a great many consumer and industrial devices.

The I2C bus (Inter-Integrated Circuit) uses just two wires, a serial data line (SDA) and a serial clock line (SCL), to allow many devices to communicate. Each device on the bus has an address, and a master device initiates transfers to or from addressed slave devices, so a single microcontroller can control numerous peripherals such as sensors, memory chips and real-time clocks using only two signal lines. The protocol defines start and stop conditions, acknowledgement bits and several standardised speed grades.

The I2S bus (Inter-IC Sound) is a synchronous serial interface designed specifically to carry pulse-code-modulated digital audio between chips, for example from a decoder to a digital-to-analogue converter. It typically uses separate lines for the bit clock, a word-select signal that distinguishes the left and right stereo channels, and the serial audio data itself. By separating audio data transport from device control, I2C and I2S are often used together in the same product, with I2C handling configuration and I2S streaming the audio.

Frequently asked questions

What is the I2C bus used for?
It is a two-wire control bus that lets a microcontroller communicate with many peripheral chips, such as sensors and memory, each identified by an address.
How does I2S differ from I2C?
I2S is a dedicated interface for streaming digital audio between chips, whereas I2C is a general-purpose bus for control and configuration of devices.
How many wires does I2C require?
It uses two signal lines: a serial data line (SDA) and a serial clock line (SCL), shared by all devices on the bus.
