Microcontrollers and PICs
A microcontroller is a complete small computer built onto a single integrated circuit. Unlike a microprocessor, which is only the central processing unit and needs external memory and support chips, a microcontroller integrates the processor core, program memory, data memory and input/output peripherals on one chip. This self-contained design makes microcontrollers ideal for embedded control: running the logic inside appliances, instruments, toys, vehicles and countless other devices that are not thought of as computers.
PICs are a well-known family of microcontrollers that became especially popular with hobbyists and in low-cost products. They span a wide range of sizes, from tiny chips with a handful of pins to more capable devices, and they include on-chip features such as timers, analog inputs and serial communication. Because they are inexpensive, widely documented and supported by free development tools, PICs are often used as a first introduction to embedded programming.
PICs sit alongside many other microcontroller families. The 8051 architecture and its derivatives, including the 80C51 and 8052, have been used in industry for decades, while development boards such as the BASIC Stamp wrap a microcontroller in an easy-to-program package for beginners. Choosing among them involves weighing processing power, memory, available peripherals, power consumption, cost and the maturity of the programming tools against the needs of the project.
