Bus systems and fieldbuses
A bus system is a communication network in which several devices share a common transmission medium, so that one set of wires carries messages among many participants rather than running a separate cable between every pair. In industrial and embedded settings these shared networks are called fieldbuses, and they connect controllers, sensors and actuators on machines and production lines. Using a single bus greatly reduces the amount of wiring needed and makes it easier to add, remove or diagnose devices.
Because many devices share one medium, a bus system needs rules to decide who may transmit and when, so that messages do not collide and get lost. Different fieldbuses solve this in different ways and are tuned to different needs: some favour fast, deterministic delivery for time-critical control, others simplicity or low cost. Each defines its own electrical signalling, message format and method of addressing, so that every device can recognise the messages meant for it on the shared line.
Several fieldbuses became established standards. Profibus is widely used in factory and process automation across Europe. The Controller Area Network, or CANbus, originated in vehicles and spread into industrial use thanks to its robustness and efficient handling of short messages. Modbus is a long-standing, simple protocol common in industrial equipment, often carried over RS-485 wiring, and Bitbus is an older serial fieldbus from the same family of ideas. Although they differ in detail, all share the core principle of letting many devices communicate reliably over one shared connection.
