Dolby Digital and Surround Sound Systems
Surround sound reproduces audio over several loudspeakers placed around the listener to create a sense of direction and space. Rather than the two channels of stereo, a surround system carries discrete channels intended for specific positions, typically front left, centre, front right, two surround speakers and a low-frequency effects channel. This is the basis of the widely used 5.1 layout, where the “.1” denotes the dedicated bass channel reproduced by a subwoofer.
Dolby Digital, also known by its technical name AC-3, is a perceptual audio compression format that stores multiple channels efficiently and is found on DVD-Video discs and digital broadcasts. DTS (Digital Theatre Systems) is a competing multichannel format that also uses compression but at different data rates. THX is not an audio format at all but a set of certification standards, originally developed for cinemas, that specifies performance targets for equipment and rooms so that a mix sounds as intended.
Reproducing these formats well depends on the playback chain and the room. An encoder packs the channels into the bitstream at the production stage, and a decoder in a receiver or processor reconstructs them for the loudspeakers. Bass management collects the low frequencies from every channel and sends them to the subwoofer, because deep bass is hard to localise. Speaker placement, the listening distance and room reflections all shape the final result, which is why home-theatre setup guides emphasise symmetry and correct angles for the surround speakers. High-resolution disc formats also carry their own audio streams alongside the compressed surround tracks.
