Telephone Circuits and Topics

The telephone system brings together a range of circuits and concepts that together make voice communication over a network possible. At the user end, the handset combines a transmitter to capture speech, a receiver to reproduce it, a dialling mechanism, a ringer and a hybrid circuit that lets a single pair of wires carry both directions of conversation at once. The exchange provides power, dial tone, switching and the ringing current that alerts the called party.

Telephone line interface circuits manage the connection between equipment and the line, handling tasks such as detecting the off-hook condition, isolating the equipment from line voltages, generating or decoding DTMF dialling tones and detecting the incoming ringing signal. These functions appear in answering machines, modems, fax machines and PBX systems. A private branch exchange switches calls among many internal extensions and connects them to the outside network, reducing the number of external lines an organisation needs.

Beyond the hardware, the operation of a telephone network involves traffic engineering, which uses the erlang as a measure of how heavily circuits are loaded to determine how many lines and switching paths are required. The familiar audible signals heard on a line — dial tone, ringing tone, busy tone and others — are standardised so that the state of a call is recognisable. Together these circuits and conventions form a coherent system for establishing, maintaining and clearing telephone calls.
