Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application that organises information in a grid of rows and columns. Each intersection of a row and column is a cell, identified by a reference such as A1, that can hold a number, text or a formula. By arranging data this way, Excel makes it easy to sort, filter and summarise information, and it is widely used for tasks ranging from simple lists to detailed financial and scientific calculations.

The program’s power comes from its formulas and built-in functions. A formula begins with an equals sign and can reference other cells, so changing one value automatically updates every result that depends on it. Functions provide ready-made operations for adding ranges, computing averages, looking up values and performing logical tests, among many others. Cell references can be relative or fixed, which controls how formulas adjust when they are copied to other cells.

Beyond calculation, Excel can turn data into charts and graphs to make patterns easier to see, and it offers tools for formatting, validating input and analysing large tables. For repetitive work, it includes a programming facility based on Visual Basic for Applications, often called VBA, which lets users record or write macros to automate sequences of steps. Learning Excel typically starts with entering and formatting data, moves on to formulas and functions, and then to charts and, for advanced users, automation with VBA.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cell reference?
It is the address of a cell, such as A1, formed from its column letter and row number, used in formulas to point at the data a calculation should use.
What is the difference between a formula and a function?
A formula is any expression that calculates a result, while a function is a built-in operation, such as SUM or AVERAGE, that can be used within a formula.
What is VBA used for in Excel?
VBA, or Visual Basic for Applications, lets users write or record macros to automate repetitive tasks and extend what the program can do.

Dynamic and Interactive Visualization with "Javaless" Applets or Interactive Excel Spreadsheets Excelets are interactive Excel spreadsheets or simulations of mathematical models. The user changes a variable and the spreadsheet changes in numerical, graphical, and/or even symbolic form (equations). Through the use of numerical experimentation and "what if" scenarios, we have a powerful learning tool for students using readily available off-the-shelf software. All of this is done computationally with no use of programming, no macros or Visual Basics for Applications
Enhancing Mathematical Graphical Displays in Excel through Animation Enhancing Mathematical Graphical Displays in Excel through AnimationThe use of spreadsheets in teaching mathematics has increased significantly in recent years. One can implement mathematical algorithms, models, visualizations, and applications naturally and effectively through interactive spreadsheet constructions and creative graphical displays. This paper demonstrates techniques that enable educators to design animated graphical displays in their spreadsheet constructions in order to produce powerful classroom demonstrations to enhance mathematical understanding, while also presenting students with new ideas for incorporating attractive visual components in their mathematical assignments and projects

Using variables in VBA Nearly all non-trivial VBA code involves declaring variables. While VBA allows a great deal of flexiblity in declaring your variables, this flexiblity can easily lead to poor coding practices. This page describes practices you should embrace regarding variable declaration. While adopting these practices can lead to more typing, following them makes code run faster, and makes the code easier to debug and maintain
