PC Motherboard
The motherboard is the main printed circuit board of a personal computer. It provides the sockets, slots and connectors that hold the other major components and the wiring that lets them communicate. The processor mounts in a socket on the board, memory modules slide into dedicated slots, and expansion cards plug into bus connectors. Power, storage drives and external ports also connect to the motherboard, making it the central hub through which all parts of the system exchange data.
At the heart of a motherboard is its chipset, a set of supporting chips that route signals between the processor, memory and peripherals. The chipset, together with the CPU socket type, determines which processors and memory the board can use and which expansion interfaces it offers.
