Freeware, shareware and PC software

Computer software is the set of programs and data that tell a computer what to do, as opposed to the physical hardware. On personal computers, software is distributed under several different licensing and payment models, which determine how it may be used, copied and shared. Understanding these models helps users know what they are allowed to do with a program and whether a payment is expected.

Freeware is software offered at no cost. The author keeps the copyright and usually restricts modification or resale, but the program itself can be downloaded and used without payment. Shareware is a try-before-you-buy model: the program is distributed freely so users can evaluate it, but continued or full use requires payment, and unregistered copies may be time-limited or have features disabled. These differ from open-source software, where the source code is published and may be studied and changed, and from conventional commercial software that is sold under a paid licence.

PC software spans many categories. System software includes operating systems such as Windows and Linux and the drivers that let hardware work. Application software covers office tools, multimedia players and editors, graphics and audio programs, internet and communication utilities, games and programming tools. Many smaller utilities — for compression, file management, system maintenance and diagnostics — are distributed as freeware or shareware, giving users a wide choice of programs for everyday tasks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between freeware and shareware?
Freeware can be used indefinitely at no cost, while shareware is offered for trial and expects payment for continued or full use.
Is freeware the same as open-source software?
No. Freeware is free to use but usually keeps its source code closed, whereas open-source software publishes its code so it can be studied and modified.
Is shareware free to keep using?
Not necessarily. Shareware is free to evaluate, but full or ongoing use generally requires registration and payment, and trial versions may be limited.
