Computer Ports and the Mouse

A computer port is a connection point where an external device attaches to the system so it can exchange data. Personal computers have used several kinds of port over time. A touchpad serves the same pointing role on laptops without a separate mouse. Instead of detecting the motion of a device, it senses the position of a finger on a flat sensing surface, usually by measuring small changes in electrical capacitance as the finger moves. The pad reports the finger’s movement and taps to the computer, which moves the cursor and registers clicks accordingly, providing a built-in pointing device that needs no desk space.
