Computer Ports and the Mouse

A computer port is a connection point where an external device attaches to the system so it can exchange data. Personal computers have used several kinds of port over time. The serial port, based on the RS-232 standard, sends data one bit at a time and was once used for modems and mice. The PS/2 connector provided dedicated ports for the keyboard and mouse. The Universal Serial Bus, or USB, later became the general-purpose port for most peripherals because it is faster and supports many device types through a single connector type.

The mouse is a pointing device that translates hand movement into the motion of a cursor on screen. Early mice used a rolling ball that turned sensors as the mouse moved, but these were largely replaced by optical mice. An optical mouse shines light, in many designs from a small light source, onto the surface beneath it and uses a tiny camera-like sensor to detect movement by comparing successive images of the surface. This approach has no moving ball to collect dirt and works on most flat surfaces.

A touchpad serves the same pointing role on laptops without a separate mouse. Instead of detecting the motion of a device, it senses the position of a finger on a flat sensing surface, usually by measuring small changes in electrical capacitance as the finger moves. The pad reports the finger’s movement and taps to the computer, which moves the cursor and registers clicks accordingly, providing a built-in pointing device that needs no desk space.
