Modems and Modulation Techniques
A modem, a contraction of modulator-demodulator, is a device that lets digital equipment communicate over a medium that was not designed for raw digital signals. The modulator part converts a stream of bits into an analogue signal suitable for transmission, and the demodulator at the far end recovers the original bits. Early modems sent data over voice telephone lines at modest speeds, while modern broadband modems use the same basic idea over telephone, coaxial or other links at far higher rates.
The amount of data a modem can carry depends heavily on its modulation technique, which is the way information is encoded onto the carrier signal. Phase-shift keying such as DPSK represents bits by shifting the phase of the carrier. Quadrature amplitude modulation, or QAM, combines changes in both amplitude and phase so that each transmitted symbol can represent several bits at once, which raises the data rate over a given bandwidth. Trellis coded modulation, or TCM, adds error-correcting structure to the symbol choices so the signal is more robust against noise.
These techniques underpin the various broadband standards, including the asymmetric and symmetric forms of DSL such as ADSL, SDSL, ADSL2+ and VDSL, as well as the modulation used on cable networks. In every case the goal is to pack as many bits as possible into the available frequency range while keeping errors low, balancing speed against the quality and length of the physical line. Earlier voiceband standards, such as the widely used V.90, applied similar principles at the lower speeds that ordinary telephone lines allowed.
