Baby and infant health
The first year of life is a period of rapid physical and neurological development. A newborn roughly triples its birth weight over the first year and gains motor skills in a broadly predictable order, from holding up the head to sitting, crawling and standing. Because an infant's immune system is still immature, much of early paediatric care focuses on protecting the child from infection while its own defences develop and while protective antibodies passed from the mother gradually fade.
Vaccination is central to preventive infant care. Routine immunisation schedules protect against diseases that were once common causes of childhood illness and death, and they work by exposing the immune system to a harmless component of a pathogen so that it can respond quickly to a real infection later. Vaccines against measles, mumps and rubella are typically combined, and rubella vaccination is especially important because infection during pregnancy can seriously harm the developing fetus. Some infections are treated with antibiotics, but antibiotics act only on bacteria and have no effect on viral illnesses.
Other elements of well-baby care include monitoring growth against reference charts, screening for hearing and metabolic conditions soon after birth, guidance on feeding and sleep, and education for parents about hygiene and the early signs of illness. Endocrine and cardiovascular conditions present at birth are also watched for, since early detection improves outcomes. Health-information resources for parents aim to combine this guidance with reminders about the recommended vaccination timetable.
Frequently asked questions
- Why are babies vaccinated so early?
- An infant's immune system is immature and maternal antibodies fade over the first months, so early immunisation builds protection before the child is likely to meet many infections.
- Why is rubella vaccination emphasised?
- Rubella is usually mild in children, but infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects, so widespread immunity helps protect unborn children.
- Do antibiotics help with every infection?
- No. Antibiotics work only against bacteria. They have no effect on viral infections such as colds or influenza.
