Pollution and the Greenhouse Effect
Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the natural environment, where they damage ecosystems and human health. It takes many forms. Air pollution comes from gases and fine particles released by burning fuels and by industry. Water pollution results when contaminants enter rivers, lakes, groundwater, and seas, harming aquatic life and the supplies people use. Soil can be contaminated by chemicals such as pesticides, by spilled oil and fuel, and by heavy metals that persist for long periods and accumulate in living things.
Certain pollutants released into the air affect the whole planet's climate. The greenhouse effect is a natural process in which gases in the atmosphere, including carbon dioxide and others, allow sunlight to reach the surface but trap part of the heat the Earth radiates back, keeping the planet warm enough to support life. Human activities, chiefly the burning of fossil fuels, add large amounts of these greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, strengthening the effect and causing the climate to warm.
The build-up of greenhouse gas emissions disturbs the climate system in ways that scientists track through emissions inventories and climate measurements. Ecological change driven by pollution and a warming climate can disrupt ecosystems, alter weather patterns, and reduce the variety of life an area supports. Reducing pollution therefore serves two linked goals: protecting local environments from direct harm and limiting the emissions that drive long-term climate change.
