Intel Pentium Microprocessors

The Pentium is a family of microprocessors developed by Intel, introduced in 1993 as the successor to the 80486. It continued the x86 instruction set architecture that began with the 8086, keeping backward compatibility with earlier software while adding performance improvements. The original Pentium introduced a superscalar design, meaning it could execute more than one instruction per clock cycle through two parallel integer pipelines, along with a faster floating-point unit and a wider data bus.

Over successive generations the brand covered a wide range of designs. The Pentium MMX added instructions aimed at multimedia and signal-processing tasks, while the Pentium Pro, Pentium II and Pentium III brought out-of-order execution, on-chip cache and higher clock speeds. The Pentium 4 used a deeply pipelined microarchitecture intended to reach very high clock frequencies. Higher-end and server variants were sold under the Xeon name, and lower-cost cut-down versions under the Celeron name.

The Pentium competed directly with x86 processors from other makers, most notably AMD, whose Athlon line offered comparable performance and helped drive the rapid clock-speed increases of that era. Enthusiasts often experimented with overclocking, running a chip above its rated speed to gain performance, which required attention to cooling and stability. The Pentium name remained in use for many years as a mainstream brand, sitting between Intel’s budget and premium product lines.
