BIOS Settings and Beep Codes
The BIOS, short for Basic Input/Output System, is firmware stored on a chip on the motherboard that runs first when a computer is switched on. It initialises and tests the hardware, then loads the operating system from a storage device. Before handing control to the operating system, the BIOS performs a power-on self-test, or POST, that checks essential components such as memory and the processor to confirm the machine can start safely.
A setup utility built into the BIOS lets the user view and change configuration settings. These can include the order in which drives are searched for a bootable operating system, the system clock, and options that control how memory, storage and peripherals behave. Common BIOS suppliers have included AMI, Award and Phoenix, and their setup screens differ in layout while offering broadly similar choices. The settings are stored in a small amount of memory kept active by a battery so they are remembered when the machine is off.
If the self-test finds a fault before the screen is available for messages, the BIOS signals the problem through a pattern of beeps from the system speaker. These beep codes encode which subsystem failed, such as memory or the graphics adapter, and the meaning of a given pattern depends on which BIOS the board uses. Many motherboards also allow the BIOS itself to be updated, a process called flashing, which replaces the firmware to fix problems or add support for newer hardware.
