Capacitive Sensors

A capacitive sensor detects the presence, position or movement of an object by measuring changes in electrical capacitance. Capacitance is the ability of a structure to store electric charge, and it depends on the size and spacing of conductive surfaces and on the material between them. When an object approaches the sensor, it alters the electric field and changes the capacitance, and the sensing circuit registers this change. Because the effect does not require contact, capacitive sensors can detect objects through a non-conductive barrier such as glass or plastic.

As proximity sensors, capacitive devices detect when an object comes near without touching it. They can sense a wide range of materials, including metals, liquids, powders and the human body, which makes them useful for detecting fill levels in containers, counting objects on a production line or sensing the approach of a hand. Their sensitivity can usually be adjusted so that they respond at a chosen distance and ignore more distant objects.

The same principle underlies the capacitive touch sensor, widely used in control panels, appliances and the screens of phones and tablets. A finger brought to the sensing surface changes the local capacitance because the human body conducts and holds charge, and the circuit interprets this as a touch. Touch sensors of this kind have no moving parts, so they do not wear out like mechanical buttons and can be sealed behind a smooth surface, which improves durability and makes cleaning easier. Capacitive sensing is also applied to measuring small displacements and detecting liquid levels.
