WLAN antenna design tools and calculators

Designing a wireless LAN antenna involves a set of repeatable calculations that small software tools and online calculators can carry out quickly. The most basic relate physical dimensions to the operating frequency: because a resonant element is a fraction of the wavelength, a calculator converts a target frequency such as 2.4 GHz into the lengths and spacings of dipole arms, Yagi elements, biquad loops or the focal geometry of a parabolic reflector. This removes arithmetic errors and lets a builder try variations before cutting any material.

Other tools estimate performance rather than dimensions. Gain calculators approximate the directivity of a dish or array from its size and frequency. Free-space path loss calculators show how signal strength falls with distance and frequency, while broader link-budget tools combine transmitter power, antenna gains at both ends, cable and connector losses, and path loss to predict whether a link will close with adequate margin. Some include the effect of the Fresnel zone, the region around the direct path that should stay clear of obstructions for a reliable connection.

Because these calculations rely on idealised models, their results are starting points rather than guarantees. Real antennas are affected by nearby metal, imperfect construction, ground reflections and weather, so a practical design usually combines a calculated baseline with measurement and adjustment. Used that way, antenna tools speed up the work of dimensioning elements and checking that a proposed wireless link is feasible.
