Digital memory and storage technology
Digital memory stores binary information as patterns of electrical charge, magnetisation or transistor states that represent bits. Memory devices are broadly divided into volatile types, which lose their contents when power is removed, and non-volatile types, which retain data without power. The distinction governs which technology suits a given role, from fast working memory to long-term storage.
Random-access memory (RAM) is the main volatile type. Dynamic RAM (DRAM) stores each bit as charge on a tiny capacitor and must be refreshed periodically, but it is dense and inexpensive, making it the usual choice for a computer's main memory. Static RAM holds each bit in a latch of transistors, is faster and needs no refresh, but uses more silicon and is reserved for caches. DRAM chips are commonly mounted on plug-in modules such as the SIMM and the later DIMM.
Read-only memory (ROM) and its programmable relatives are non-volatile. Mask ROM is written during manufacture, PROM is programmed once by the user, and EPROM can be erased by ultraviolet light through a quartz window and reprogrammed. EEPROM is erased electrically. Flash memory is a form of electrically erasable memory that erases and writes in blocks rather than single bytes; the NAND variety offers high density and is the basis of memory cards, USB drives and solid-state disks, while NOR flash allows fast random reading and is used to hold firmware.
