Antenna design software and calculators

An antenna converts electrical signals into radio waves and back again, and its physical dimensions, shape and surroundings determine how well it radiates at a given frequency. Designing one by hand is difficult because the behaviour depends on the interaction of currents over the whole structure. Software fills this gap by modelling antennas mathematically, predicting their performance and helping a designer arrive at the right dimensions before anything is built.

Antenna modelling programs simulate how current flows along the conductors and compute the resulting radiation pattern, the directions in which the antenna sends and receives most strongly. Many are based on the numerical electromagnetics method, which divides a structure into short segments and solves for the currents on each. From this the software derives important quantities such as gain, which describes how the antenna concentrates energy in a preferred direction, the input impedance, and the bandwidth over which the antenna works efficiently.

Alongside full modelling there are simpler RF calculators that handle common, well-understood designs. These work out the lengths of elements for a dipole or a Yagi, the dimensions of a WLAN antenna for a particular band, or the matching needed for a transmission line. A transmission-line calculator finds characteristic impedance and loss for a given cable, helping ensure power reaches the antenna rather than being reflected. Together these tools shorten the design cycle and reduce trial-and-error building and tuning.

Frequently asked questions

What does antenna modelling software calculate?
It simulates the currents on the conductors to predict the radiation pattern, gain, input impedance and usable bandwidth of an antenna design.
What is antenna gain?
Gain describes how strongly an antenna concentrates radiated energy in a preferred direction compared with a reference antenna, rather than spreading it equally everywhere.
Why use an RF calculator for a simple antenna?
For common designs such as a dipole or a band-specific WLAN antenna, a calculator quickly gives element lengths and matching values without running a full electromagnetic simulation.
