Audio software and filter design

Audio electronics handles signals in the range the human ear can hear, roughly from twenty hertz to twenty kilohertz, and a great deal of audio design involves shaping how a circuit responds to different frequencies. Software in this field automates the mathematics of designing filters and other audio stages, letting an engineer specify the desired behaviour and obtain the component values that achieve it, then check the result by simulation.

A filter passes some frequencies while attenuating others. A low-pass filter removes high frequencies, a high-pass filter removes low ones, and band-pass and band-stop filters select or reject a range. Filter design software lets the user choose the type, the cut-off frequency and a response shape such as Butterworth, Chebyshev or Bessel, each trading off flatness, sharpness and phase behaviour differently. The program then calculates the resistor, capacitor and inductor values, or the coefficients for an active filter built around operational amplifiers.

Beyond filters, audio software includes circuit simulators that predict frequency response, gain and distortion of amplifier and tone-control stages, and analysis tools that display a signal's spectrum. Some packages model loudspeaker crossovers, which split the audio band so that woofers and tweeters each receive the frequencies they handle best. By working out values and showing the predicted response in advance, these tools reduce the trial-and-error of building and measuring audio circuits on the bench.

Frequently asked questions

What does filter design software compute?
From a chosen filter type, cut-off frequency and response shape it calculates the component values or amplifier coefficients needed to obtain that response.
What is the difference between Butterworth and Chebyshev filters?
A Butterworth filter has the flattest passband, while a Chebyshev filter rolls off more sharply at the cost of small ripples in the passband; the choice trades smoothness against sharpness.
What frequency range does audio electronics cover?
It covers the range of human hearing, approximately twenty hertz to twenty kilohertz, which is the band audio circuits are designed to reproduce.
