Building your own computer

Building a personal computer means assembling standard components into a working system rather than buying a pre-built machine. The advantages are control over the exact parts, easier upgrades and repairs, and a better understanding of how the hardware fits together. The core components are chosen to be electrically and mechanically compatible, and most of the assembly is a matter of seating parts firmly and connecting the right cables.

The motherboard is the central circuit board that links everything together. It holds the CPU (the microprocessor, such as an Intel or AMD chip), sockets for RAM memory modules, and expansion slots based on buses like PCI, AGP and the later PCI Express. The motherboard's chipset coordinates data between the processor, memory and peripherals. Storage devices — hard disk drives, solid-state drives and optical drives — connect through interfaces such as IDE or SATA, while the power supply feeds regulated voltages to each part.

When the machine is first switched on, firmware on the motherboard — historically the BIOS, now usually UEFI — runs a power-on self test (POST) that checks the hardware. If something is wrong, the board may signal the fault with a pattern of beep codes whose meaning depends on the firmware vendor. After a successful test the firmware loads the operating system, which in turn needs the correct device drivers so that components like the graphics card, sound and network adapters work properly. Older boards sometimes required physical jumper settings to configure options that are now handled in firmware menus.
