Wireless networking and security
Wireless networking lets computers and devices exchange data without physical cabling by sending it as radio signals. A device with a wireless adapter associates with an access point, which bridges the radio link to a wired LAN and onward to the internet. Because the medium is shared open air, several devices coordinate their transmissions and identify the network they belong to by its name, allowing laptops, phones, and other equipment to roam within range of the access point.
The convenience of broadcasting data through the air brings a security challenge: anyone within range can pick up the radio signals, so a wireless network without protection is open to eavesdropping and unauthorised use. Wireless network security addresses this mainly through encryption, which scrambles the data so that only devices holding the correct key can read it. Early protection schemes proved weak and were superseded by stronger standards, and current practice relies on robust encryption together with a strong passphrase to keep a network private.
Beyond encryption, several measures harden a wireless LAN. Access control can restrict which devices may join, the network can require authentication before granting access, and administrators are advised to change default settings and keep firmware updated. The same TCP/IP protocols, network address translation, and broadband links such as ADSL or cable that serve wired networks operate over the wireless link as well, so the radio segment is simply one part of a larger network whose overall security depends on protecting every stage.
