Hardware diagnostic and repair tools

Hardware utilities are programs that test, monitor and maintain the physical components of a computer rather than its documents or applications. They help confirm that parts are working correctly, identify faults when a machine misbehaves, and carry out low-level maintenance. Because some checks must run outside the normal operating system, several of these tools are designed to run from a boot disk or in a minimal environment.

Memory testers write known patterns to RAM and read them back to detect faulty cells; a well-known free example is Memtest86, which runs from bootable media so it can test all of the memory. Diagnostic tools more broadly probe the processor, drives, temperatures and other components, reporting their condition and helping pinpoint whether a problem is hardware-related. Monitoring utilities track values such as temperatures, fan speeds and supply voltages while the system runs.

Other tools address the boot process and storage. Boot-sector repair utilities fix the small region of a disk that the firmware reads to start the computer, which can become damaged by malware or improper shutdowns and prevent a system from booting. A RAM disk tool sets aside part of the computer's memory to act as an extremely fast temporary drive, useful for caches or scratch files, though its contents are lost when power is removed. Many of these utilities are distributed as freeware and are valuable for troubleshooting and keeping a system healthy.

Frequently asked questions

What does a memory test do?
It writes and reads back patterns across RAM to find faulty cells, helping diagnose crashes and errors caused by bad memory.
What is a RAM disk?
It is a portion of system memory made to behave like a very fast drive. It is quick but temporary, since its contents vanish when the computer is powered off.
What is boot-sector repair?
It fixes the small area of a disk the firmware reads to start the computer, restoring the ability to boot when that area is damaged.
