World War II Fortifications and Bunkers

The Second World War saw the construction of some of the most extensive defensive fortifications in history. These ranged from continuous fortified lines along national borders to concrete bunkers built in depth along coastlines. Such works combined reinforced concrete strongpoints, gun emplacements, observation posts and obstacles, and they reflected the belief that prepared defences could blunt or channel an enemy advance.

Several major systems became well known. France built the Maginot Line along its frontier with Germany during the 1930s, a chain of heavily armoured forts intended to deter invasion; in 1940 German forces bypassed much of it by advancing through Belgium and the Ardennes. Germany's corresponding western defences, the Siegfried Line (known to the Germans as the Westwall), faced France along the Rhineland. In Finland, the Mannerheim Line across the Karelian Isthmus featured prominently in the Winter War against the Soviet Union.

The largest German programme was the Atlantic Wall, a vast belt of coastal fortifications built along occupied Western Europe to repel an Allied seaborne invasion. It included gun batteries, bunkers, beach obstacles and minefields, and it was put to the test during the Normandy landings of June 1944. Despite their scale, fixed fortifications repeatedly proved vulnerable to being outflanked, bombarded or overwhelmed, illustrating the limits of static defence in a war of mobility and combined arms.
