World War II Biographies

The course of the Second World War was shaped by the decisions of national leaders, military commanders and other individuals whose lives have been extensively documented. Biographies of these figures help explain the political aims, strategies and personal rivalries that influenced the conflict between 1939 and 1945, on both the Allied and the Axis sides.

Among the wartime heads of government, Winston Churchill led Britain through much of the war, Franklin D. Roosevelt and later Harry S. Truman led the United States, and Joseph Stalin headed the Soviet Union. France's Free French forces were led in exile by Charles de Gaulle. On the Axis side, Adolf Hitler was the dictator of Nazi Germany, Benito Mussolini ruled Fascist Italy, and Emperor Hirohito reigned in Japan. Senior military commanders such as the American generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and George S. Patton planned and led major campaigns in Europe.

The biographies also include figures connected to the Holocaust, the systematic Nazi genocide of European Jews and other groups, carried out at camps such as Auschwitz and Dachau. Anne Frank, a young Jewish diarist who hid in Amsterdam before being deported, became one of its most widely read witnesses, while individuals such as Oskar Schindler are remembered for protecting people from persecution. Studying these lives provides insight into both the leadership of the war and its profound human consequences.
