Schematic and Circuit Symbols

A schematic diagram represents an electrical or electronic circuit using standardised graphical symbols rather than pictures of the actual parts. Each symbol is a simplified, recognisable sign for a particular component, and lines between symbols represent the electrical connections, or nets, that join them. This abstraction lets a schematic show how a circuit works, its logical structure, independently of how the components are physically arranged on a board, so the same circuit can be drawn compactly and read by anyone familiar with the conventions.

Common symbols cover passive components such as resistors, capacitors and inductors, sources such as batteries and signal generators, and active devices such as diodes, transistors, operational amplifiers and logic gates. National and international standards define these symbols, and although some shapes differ between conventions, for example resistors drawn as a zigzag or as a rectangle, the meaning is consistent within each standard. Related symbol sets exist for specialised fields, including telecommunication diagrams and flowcharts, which use their own agreed glyphs.
