Science and engineering rely on shared systems of symbols and codes to express quantities, operations and information unambiguously. These include alphabets and notations borrowed for technical use, mathematical signs, and character-encoding schemes that let machines represent text. A reference collection of such symbols and codes is a practical aid for reading formulas, interpreting documents and working with computer data.
The Greek alphabet is used extensively in mathematics, physics and electronics, where individual letters stand for standard quantities; for example, omega commonly denotes the ohm or angular frequency, pi the well-known geometric constant, and lambda a wavelength. Mathematical symbols provide a compact language for operations and relations, from the basic arithmetic signs to those for summation, integration and inequality. Roman numerals, a non-positional system using letters such as I, V, X, L, C, D and M, still appear in numbering and dates.
Character codes assign numeric values to letters, digits and control functions so that computers and communication systems can store and transmit text.
