Radio Frequency and the Electromagnetic Spectrum
The electromagnetic spectrum is the full range of electromagnetic radiation, ordered by frequency and wavelength, from very-low-frequency radio waves through microwaves, infrared, visible light and ultraviolet to X-rays and gamma rays. All of these are the same kind of wave travelling at the speed of light; they differ only in frequency. Frequency and wavelength are inversely related, so higher-frequency waves are shorter, and the product of the two equals the wave's propagation speed.
Radio frequency (RF) refers to the lower-frequency portion of the spectrum used for wireless communication, broadcasting, radar and navigation. By international convention this region is divided into bands with standard names and abbreviations, progressing from very low frequency (VLF) and low frequency (LF) through medium and high frequency up to very high frequency (VHF), ultra high frequency (UHF) and the microwave bands above them. Each band has characteristic propagation behaviour: lower frequencies tend to follow the curve of the Earth and penetrate obstacles, while higher frequencies travel in more direct lines and carry more information.
Because the spectrum is a shared and finite resource, its use is regulated and allocated to services such as broadcasting, mobile telephony, aviation, maritime communication and satellite links. A frequency chart maps these allocations and band boundaries, giving a reference for where particular services operate. Understanding the spectrum is essential to antenna design, to choosing components for a given frequency, and to avoiding interference between systems sharing nearby bands.
