Electronic Component Identification and Datasheets
Electronic circuits are assembled from a vocabulary of standard components, and being able to identify a part and find its specifications is a routine part of design and repair. The basic passive devices are resistors, capacitors and inductors, while active devices include diodes, transistors and integrated circuits. Specialised components such as optical sensors, operational amplifiers and voltage regulators extend the range. Each part carries markings, codes or a type number that identifies it and links it to published technical data.
Component coding allows values and types to be read directly from the part. Resistors commonly use coloured bands or printed codes to indicate resistance and tolerance; small capacitors use numeric codes; and semiconductors are marked with type numbers that follow various national and manufacturer numbering schemes. Because the same physical package may house many different devices, the printed number is essential for determining a part's function, pin assignment and ratings.
The authoritative source of information about a component is its datasheet, the document the manufacturer publishes describing electrical characteristics, maximum ratings, pin connections, package outlines and typical applications. When a specific part is unavailable or obsolete, a cross-reference guide helps find an equivalent or replacement from another maker that matches the original's key parameters. Skilful use of datasheets and cross-references is central to selecting parts, designing circuits and servicing existing equipment.
Frequently asked questions
- What information does a datasheet provide?
- A datasheet lists a component's electrical characteristics, absolute maximum ratings, pin assignments, package dimensions and typical application circuits, supplied by the manufacturer.
- How are resistor values marked?
- Most resistors use coloured bands, or sometimes printed codes, to encode the resistance value and tolerance. Each colour represents a digit or multiplier.
- What is a component cross-reference?
- It is a guide that matches a part to equivalent devices from other manufacturers, helping locate a substitute when the original is unavailable or discontinued.

SMD codes SMD marking codes, SMD datasheets, SMD devices are, by their very
nature, too small to carry conventional semiconductor type numbers. Instead, a somewhat arbitrary coding system has grown up, where the device package carries
a simple two- or three-character ID code. This HTML book is designed to provide
an easy means of device identification. It lists well over 3,900 device codes in
alphabetical order, together with type numbers, device characteristics or
equivalents and pinout information |
