Electrical Safety and Protection Devices

Electrical safety is concerned with preventing the harm that electric current can cause to people and equipment. The two main hazards are electric shock, where current passes through the body, and fire, where excessive current overheats wiring. Protection relies on a combination of insulation that keeps conductors apart, earthing that gives fault current a safe path, and automatic devices that disconnect the supply when something goes wrong. These measures work together so that a single failure does not lead to injury.

A fuse is the simplest protective device: it contains a thin wire that melts and breaks the circuit when the current exceeds a safe value, for example during a short circuit or overload. A circuit breaker performs the same protective function but uses a mechanism that trips and can be reset rather than replaced, so it can be switched back on once the fault is cleared. Both protect wiring and equipment from the heating effect of overcurrent.

Protecting people from shock requires a different device. A residual-current device, also called an earth-leakage circuit breaker or ground-fault circuit interrupter, continuously compares the current flowing out to a load with the current returning. In normal operation these are equal; if some current leaks away, for instance through a person touching a live part, the imbalance is detected and the device disconnects the supply within a fraction of a second. Other safety measures include double insulation, safe low-voltage supplies for certain applications, and warning labels and barriers around high-voltage equipment. Together these layered protections reduce the risk of electrical accidents.
