Guitar Tube Amplifiers
A guitar tube amplifier is a valve amplifier designed specifically to amplify the signal from an electric guitar and drive a loudspeaker. Unlike a hi-fi amplifier, which aims to reproduce a signal as faithfully as possible, a guitar amplifier is treated as part of the instrument: its tonal coloration and its behaviour when overdriven are central to the sound players seek. A typical design has a preamplifier section that shapes the tone and a power section, often using pentode or beam-power tubes, that delivers wattage to the speaker through an output transformer.
The distinctive character of these amplifiers comes largely from how tubes respond when pushed beyond their linear range. Instead of clipping abruptly, a tube overloads smoothly, adding harmonics that listeners describe as warm or musical. Both the preamp tubes and the output tubes can be driven into this region, and the interaction between them, along with the output transformer and speaker, gives each amplifier its voice. Controls for gain, tone and volume let a player set how much of this overdrive is produced.
Classic guitar amplifiers built around tubes such as the 12AX7 in preamp positions and power tubes like the EL34, 6L6 or EL84 became templates that are still copied and reissued today.
