Special-Purpose Tubes

Beyond the familiar triodes and pentodes used for amplification, the vacuum-tube era produced many specialised devices built for particular tasks. These special tubes exploited the behaviour of electrons in a vacuum or in a low-pressure gas to indicate, count, switch or generate signals in ways that ordinary amplifying tubes could not.

The magic eye tube is a tuning indicator that shows a glowing fluorescent pattern, often green, whose shape changes to signal correct adjustment, and it was widely fitted to radios and tape recorders. The Dekatron is a gas-filled counting tube with a ring of ten cathodes; an applied pulse makes a glowing discharge step around the ring one position at a time, so the spinning glow visibly counts in decades. Such tubes were used in early counters and timing equipment before digital logic became cheap.

The klystron belongs to a different family altogether. It is a microwave tube that amplifies or generates very high-frequency signals by bunching a beam of electrons as it passes through resonant cavities, transferring energy from the beam to the signal. Klystrons have served in radar, satellite communications, particle accelerators and broadcast transmitters. Together these devices illustrate the diversity of vacuum and gas-filled tubes, many of which had no direct equivalent until specialised semiconductors were developed.
