Tilt Sensors and Inclinometers
A tilt sensor detects the orientation or inclination of an object relative to the direction of gravity. An inclinometer is a tilt-measuring instrument that gives a reading of the angle rather than a simple on or off indication. These devices are used to confirm that something is level, to measure slope, and to detect when equipment has been tipped over, with applications ranging from construction and surveying to consumer electronics and safety cut-outs.
Several mechanisms achieve tilt sensing. A simple tilt switch may contain a small conductive ball or a drop of mercury that rolls to one end of a sealed cavity, bridging or breaking a pair of contacts depending on orientation. An electrolytic tilt sensor uses a curved capsule partly filled with a conductive liquid and several electrodes; as the device tilts, the liquid covers the electrodes differently, changing the electrical resistance between them in a way that indicates the angle. This gives a continuous, repeatable measurement rather than a single threshold.
Modern electronic inclinometers frequently use micromachined accelerometers, which sense the component of gravitational acceleration along their axes. Because gravity provides a constant reference, the measured acceleration components reveal the tilt angle. Dual-axis devices report tilt in two directions at once. The choice between a simple switch and a precise inclinometer depends on whether the application needs only a tipped or level indication or an accurate angle measurement.
