Energy Production Animations

Energy production animations illustrate how power stations turn a primary source of energy into electricity. Such models are well suited to animation because a power plant is a sequence of energy conversions, and a diagram that moves can show each stage in turn — the source, the turbine, the generator, and the flow of electricity to the grid. Most large plants share the same final step, in which a spinning turbine drives a generator, so the animations often highlight what differs upstream: how each source is harnessed to turn that turbine.

The sources represented span both conventional and renewable technologies. A hydroelectric plant animation shows water falling through a turbine, converting the potential energy of stored water into electricity. A nuclear power plant model depicts heat from a controlled nuclear reaction boiling water into steam to drive a turbine, often including the familiar cooling tower that releases waste heat as water vapor. Wave power animations show how the motion of the sea can be captured, while a solar cell animation illustrates sunlight freeing electrons in a semiconductor to produce current.

Some animations also cover newer concepts, such as the solar chimney, in which the Sun heats air under a large canopy so that the warmed air rises through a tall tower and drives turbines on its way up.
