Geography

Geography is the study of the Earth's surface, its features, and the relationships between people and their environment. It is commonly divided into two broad branches. Physical geography examines the natural world, including landforms, climate, oceans, soils, and the processes that shape them. Human geography studies how people live on and use the Earth, including the distribution of populations, settlements, and economic activity, and how human society both shapes and is shaped by the natural environment.

Physical geography draws on several earth sciences. Geology explains the composition and structure of the Earth and the slow forces that build and wear down landscapes. Meteorology studies the atmosphere and weather, while hydrology examines water on and beneath the land, including the water cycle, the continuous movement of water as it evaporates, falls as precipitation, and flows back to the sea. Oceanography studies the seas, which cover most of the planet, their currents, and their influence on climate.

Geography ties these strands together by considering how natural systems and human life interact across space. A globe or map represents the arrangement of continents, oceans, and other features and lets geographers analyse patterns and distributions.
