Car Encyclopedia: The Systems of a Motor Vehicle

A modern car is an assembly of interacting systems, each handling one function so that the whole vehicle can convert stored fuel energy into controlled motion. Understanding a car means understanding how these systems cooperate rather than treating it as a single machine.

The engine converts the chemical energy of fuel into mechanical work, most commonly by burning a fuel-air mixture in cylinders. The fuel system stores fuel and meters it to the engine, while the exhaust system carries away the burnt gases and reduces noise and pollutants, often using a catalytic converter. A cooling system circulates coolant to remove the considerable heat produced by combustion and keep the engine within a safe temperature range. The drivetrain, including the transmission and the axles, transfers the engine's power to the wheels and adjusts the balance between torque and speed.

The suspension links the wheels to the body through springs and dampers, absorbing road irregularities to keep the tyres in contact with the surface and the ride comfortable. Beyond the conventional petrol or diesel engine, cars can run on a range of alternative fuels: biodiesel made from vegetable oils or animal fats, ethanol and methanol alcohols, hydrogen, compressed natural gas, and propane. Electric drive replaces the combustion engine entirely with a battery and motor. Each fuel has different energy content, emissions and handling requirements, which influence engine and storage design. Heating systems for the cabin typically reuse waste heat from the engine.
