Cell biology animations

The cell is the smallest unit of life, and much of what happens inside it occurs at a molecular scale and in constant motion, which makes animation a natural way to teach it. Visual simulations can show the interior of a cell as a busy, three-dimensional space rather than the flat labelled diagram found in textbooks, helping learners picture how organelles are arranged and how materials move between them.

Cell animations typically begin with structure. They depict the cell membrane that encloses the cell, the cytoplasm that fills it, and the membrane-bound organelles of eukaryotic cells: the nucleus that holds the DNA, the mitochondria that release energy, the ribosomes and endoplasmic reticulum where proteins are made, the Golgi apparatus that packages them, and vesicles and vacuoles that store and transport material. Plant cells additionally have a rigid cell wall and chloroplasts for photosynthesis.

Beyond structure, animations illustrate dynamic processes. Transport across the membrane — diffusion, osmosis, active transport, endocytosis and exocytosis — is shown as particles crossing the boundary. Cell division is presented stage by stage: mitosis produces two identical cells for growth and repair, while meiosis produces sex cells with half the chromosome number.
