Botanical Images

Botanical images are illustrations and photographs that record the appearance of plants and their parts. They have long been central to botany, the study of plants, because an accurate visual record allows species to be recognised, compared and described. Images may show whole plants or focus on specific features such as flowers, leaves, fruit, seeds or roots, capturing the details that distinguish one species from another.

Before photography, plants were documented through detailed drawings and paintings known as botanical illustration. Skilled artists worked closely with botanists to depict not only a plant's overall form but also the fine structure of its flowers and other organs, often including cross-sections and magnified parts. These illustrations accompanied scientific descriptions and helped establish the standard appearance of each species. Photography later added a fast and faithful way to capture plants as they appear in nature, while illustration remains valued for its clarity and ability to emphasise diagnostic features.

Collections of plant and flower images serve many purposes. They aid identification by letting observers match a specimen against reference pictures, support teaching by showing structures such as flower parts and leaf shapes, and document the diversity of vascular and seed plants across regions and seasons. Roses, trees, wildflowers and cultivated varieties are all recorded in such image archives. By preserving how plants look, botanical images form a lasting reference for science, horticulture and education.

Frequently asked questions

What is botanical illustration?
Botanical illustration is the art of drawing or painting plants with scientific accuracy, often showing details such as flower structure and cross-sections to aid identification and description.
How do botanical images help identify plants?
They let an observer compare a real specimen with reference pictures of known species, matching features such as flower shape, leaf form and growth habit to find the correct name.
Why use illustrations when photographs exist?
Illustrations can emphasise the key diagnostic features of a plant, combine details from several specimens, and show magnified or cut-away views that a single photograph may not capture.
