Automotive Batteries and the Charging System
An automotive battery stores electrical energy chemically and supplies the large burst of current needed to crank the starter motor and ignite the engine. Most conventional vehicles use a lead-acid battery, which consists of plates of lead and lead compounds immersed in a sulfuric acid electrolyte; the chemical reaction between them produces a nominal cell voltage, and six cells in series give the familiar twelve-volt system used in most cars.
Once the engine runs, the charging system takes over both to power the electrical loads and to recharge the battery. Its central component is the alternator, a generator that produces alternating current as the engine drives it through a belt. Inside the alternator, a rotating electromagnet called the rotor spins within a set of fixed windings called the stator, inducing voltage in the stator coils. Because the vehicle's electrical system runs on direct current, a rectifier stack of diodes converts the alternating current from the stator into direct current.
A voltage regulator controls the strength of the rotor's magnetic field to hold the output at a steady level despite changes in engine speed and electrical demand, preventing both undercharging and overcharging of the battery. A charge warning lamp on the dashboard alerts the driver when the charging system is not delivering proper voltage, often signalling a failed alternator or a broken drive belt. Related ignition components, including the ignition coil that steps up battery voltage to fire the spark plugs, draw on the same electrical system. Together the battery and charging system supply every electrical function of the vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between the battery and the alternator?
- The battery stores energy and supplies the high current to start the engine, while the alternator generates electricity once the engine runs, powering the car and recharging the battery.
- Why does an alternator need a rectifier?
- The alternator's spinning rotor and stator produce alternating current, but the vehicle operates on direct current, so a stack of diodes rectifies the output before it reaches the battery and electrical system.
- What does the charge warning lamp indicate?
- It lights when the charging system is not producing the correct voltage, commonly pointing to a faulty alternator, a failed regulator or a broken drive belt.

Alternator secrets a modern alternator, like the generator, contains both moving and stationary coils of wire. In the alternator, however, the moving
coil, called the rotor, uses current supplied through slip rings to generate a
moving field. Power is extracted from the stationary field coils |

Batteries
the Lead acid battery is made up of plates, lead, and lead oxide (various other
elements are used to change density, hardness, porosity, etc.) with a 35%
sulfuric acid and 65% water solution. This solution is called electrolyte which
causes a chemical reaction that produce electrons. When you test a battery with
a hydrometer you are measuring the amount of sulfuric acid in the electrolyte |
