Automotive Technology
Automotive technology is the body of engineering knowledge concerned with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of motor vehicles. It draws on mechanical, electrical, materials and control engineering, because a car combines a heat engine, a power-transmission system, structural components and increasingly sophisticated electronics into one machine.
At the centre is the engine, which converts fuel into motion. In spark-ignition engines a fuel-air mixture is ignited by a spark, while in compression-ignition diesel engines the heat of strongly compressed air ignites the fuel. The fuel system stores and meters the fuel, which may be petrol, diesel, or an alternative such as hydrogen, methanol, natural gas or propane, each requiring different storage and delivery arrangements. The drivetrain, including the clutch or torque converter, gearbox and axles, transmits the engine's power to the wheels while adjusting the trade-off between torque and speed.
Braking systems convert the vehicle's kinetic energy into heat to slow it safely, typically through friction at the wheels, often assisted hydraulically. Mechanical arrangements such as the cam-and-follower drive valves and other timed motions within the engine. Surrounding all of this are systems for cooling, lubrication, exhaust treatment and electrical supply, plus the suspension and steering that keep the vehicle controllable. Modern automotive technology also covers emissions control and electronic management, as engines must meet standards that limit pollutants while delivering efficient performance. Together these disciplines make a road vehicle a coordinated engineering system rather than a collection of separate parts.
