Materials Processing Techniques
Materials processing covers the methods used to shape raw materials into finished parts and to modify their properties. These techniques turn metal, plastic and other stock into components of the required form, strength and surface quality. Manufacturing engineers select a process based on the material, the shape needed, the quantity required and the properties the finished part must have.
Shaping processes form a major group. Casting pours molten metal into a mould where it solidifies into the mould's shape, useful for complex forms. Forming reshapes solid material through plastic deformation, as in rolling, forging, bending and stamping, the last pressing sheet metal into shape with dies. Joining processes connect parts permanently; welding fuses materials by melting them together, and methods include oxyacetylene gas welding, electric arc welding and gas-shielded arc processes that protect the molten metal from the air.
Property-changing processes alter a material without necessarily changing its shape. Heat treatment heats and cools metal in controlled ways: annealing softens metal and relieves internal stresses, tempering reduces brittleness after hardening, hardening increases strength, and stress relieving removes residual stresses from earlier work. Surface treatments protect or enhance the outer layer of a part; electroplating deposits a thin metallic coating to resist corrosion or improve appearance, while other coatings and finishes guard against wear and the environment. Together these techniques give engineers control over both the form and the behaviour of materials.
