Astronomy Images and Space Photography

Images of space record objects far beyond ordinary human sight, from planets and their moons to distant nebulae and galaxies. They are made by telescopes and cameras that collect light, and increasingly other forms of radiation, over long exposures. Because cosmic objects are faint and far away, an astronomical image often gathers light for minutes or hours, accumulating detail that the unaided eye, glimpsing the sky for only an instant, could never perceive.

Ground-based observatories capture much of this imagery, but Earth's atmosphere blurs fine detail and blocks some wavelengths. Telescopes placed in orbit avoid these problems: the Hubble Space Telescope, operating above the atmosphere, has returned exceptionally sharp pictures of planets, star-forming regions and remote galaxies. Robotic space probes add another source, photographing the surfaces of the Moon, Mars and the outer planets from close range during flybys and orbital missions.

Many published space pictures are not simple snapshots in visible light. Cameras frequently record through separate colour filters or in wavelengths such as infrared and ultraviolet, and these frames are combined and assigned colours to reveal structure and chemistry that the eye cannot see. The result is both scientifically informative and visually striking. Such images document features like the rings of Saturn, the cratered surfaces of moons, the shapes of constellations, and the spiral arms of galaxies, supporting research as well as public interest in astronomy.

Frequently asked questions

Why are space telescopes like Hubble placed in orbit?
Above the atmosphere there is no air to blur the image or block certain wavelengths, so an orbiting telescope can produce sharper, more detailed pictures.
Are the colours in astronomy images real?
Sometimes. Many images combine separate filtered exposures, including infrared or ultraviolet, with colours chosen to highlight detail rather than to match exactly what the eye would see.
How are close-up pictures of other planets taken?
By robotic space probes that fly past or orbit a planet and photograph it from nearby, then transmit the images back to Earth.
