Electronic Measurement Circuits

Measurement circuits are arrangements designed to determine the value of an electrical quantity such as resistance, capacitance, voltage or current with as much accuracy as possible. A central technique is the bridge, in which an unknown component is compared against known reference components rather than measured directly. Comparison methods of this kind can be far more precise than reading an absolute value, because the result depends on a ratio of components and on detecting a null rather than on the accuracy of a single meter.

The Wheatstone bridge is the classic example. Four resistors are connected in a diamond, a supply is applied across one diagonal, and a detector reads the voltage across the other. When the ratio of resistances in the two arms is equal the bridge is balanced and the detector reads zero, allowing an unknown resistor to be found from the three known ones. Adding an amplifier across the detector diagonal, forming a bridge amplifier, turns the small imbalance produced by a sensor such as a strain gauge into a usable output signal.

The oscilloscope is the other workhorse of measurement, displaying how a voltage varies over time. By feeding two signals to its horizontal and vertical inputs it can also draw Lissajous figures, whose shape reveals the frequency ratio and phase difference between the signals. Interactive simulations of bridges and scope displays let learners adjust component values and watch the balance point or the Lissajous pattern change in real time, reinforcing how each circuit responds to its inputs.

Frequently asked questions

How does a Wheatstone bridge measure resistance?
It balances an unknown resistor against three known ones. When the arm ratios match, the detector reads zero, and the unknown value follows from the known resistors.
What is a bridge amplifier?
It is an amplifier connected across a bridge's output diagonal. It boosts the small imbalance voltage produced by a sensor so it can be measured or processed.
What do Lissajous figures on an oscilloscope show?
They appear when two signals drive the horizontal and vertical axes. The figure's shape indicates the frequency ratio and the phase difference between the two signals.

Superheterodyne spectrum analyzer a spectrum analyzer is an extremely useful measurement tool that can show, in the frequency domain, information not readily recognizable with a time domain instrument such as an oscilloscope. For example, the frequency content of a signal (e.g. a fundamental sinusoid and one or more harmonic components) is readily identified with a spectrum analyzer
