Black Smokers and Hydrothermal Vents

A hydrothermal vent is an opening in the sea floor from which geothermally heated water escapes. Black smokers are a striking type of hydrothermal vent that release dark, superheated, mineral-rich fluid resembling billowing smoke. They occur on the deep ocean floor, particularly along mid-ocean ridges and other zones of volcanic and tectonic activity, where the seabed is being stretched and renewed.

Black smokers form when seawater seeps down through cracks in the ocean crust and is heated by underlying magma. The hot water dissolves minerals from the surrounding rock, especially metal sulphides, and rises back toward the sea floor. When this scalding fluid meets the near-freezing surrounding seawater, the dissolved minerals precipitate out as fine dark particles, producing the smoky plume that gives the vents their name. Over time the minerals also build up around the opening to form tall chimney-like structures. The escaping water can be extremely hot yet remains liquid because of the immense pressure at great depth.

Although they lie far below the reach of sunlight, black smokers support thriving communities of specialised organisms. Microbes there obtain energy not from light but from chemicals in the vent fluid, a process called chemosynthesis, and they form the base of a food web that includes tube worms, clams, shrimp and other animals adapted to the harsh conditions. These ecosystems are studied in geology, marine ecology and geochemistry, and are related to other geothermal phenomena such as geysers, hot springs and fumaroles found on land.
