Solar chimney towers

A solar chimney, sometimes called a solar updraft tower, is a type of power plant that generates electricity from sunlight using the simple fact that warm air rises. Unlike photovoltaic panels, which convert light directly into current, a solar chimney works thermally and mechanically: it heats air, channels the resulting upward flow, and uses that flow to turn turbines. The concept appeals as a renewable, fuel-free way to produce power, particularly in hot, sunny regions with plenty of open land.

The plant has three main parts. A large transparent or translucent canopy, the collector, is built close to the ground over a wide area and acts like a greenhouse, letting sunlight in and trapping the heat so that the air beneath it warms strongly. At the centre of the collector stands a tall vertical tower, the chimney. Because warm air is less dense than the cooler air outside, it rises through the chimney, drawing more heated air in from the edges of the collector and creating a continuous updraft. Turbines placed at the base of the tower, where the airflow is fastest, are spun by this rising air and drive generators.

The taller the tower and the larger the collector, the greater the temperature difference and the airflow that can be produced, so practical designs are very large structures. Because the ground and air under the collector retain some heat, a solar chimney can keep generating for a time after sunset, and heat-storing material can be added to extend this. The technology has been demonstrated in pilot projects rather than built widely, but it remains of interest as a straightforward, low-maintenance approach to sustainable solar energy.
