Astronomy software

Astronomy software helps observers and students explore the sky, plan observations and process astronomical images. The most familiar category is the planetarium or sky-charting program, which renders the positions of stars, planets, the Moon and deep-sky objects for any date, time and location on Earth. By combining star catalogues with orbital data, these programs can show the sky as it appeared in the past, predict how it will look in the future, and identify objects visible at a given moment.

Closely related are ephemeris tools, which compute the precise positions and rise and set times of Solar System bodies, and utilities that predict events such as eclipses, planetary conjunctions, satellite passes and the visibility of comets. Many programs draw on standard catalogues like Hipparcos, Tycho or Messier and the New General Catalogue (NGC) to label objects accurately.

For people with telescopes, some software adds telescope control, sending pointing commands to motorised mounts (often through the ASCOM standard on Windows) so the instrument slews automatically to a chosen target. Other programs focus on capturing and processing images: stacking many exposures to reduce noise, aligning frames, and enhancing planetary or deep-sky photographs. Open-source planetarium programs such as Stellarium and the data-rich SkyChart (Cartes du Ciel) are widely used examples, and many tools are distributed as freeware for education and amateur use.
