MP3 software

MP3 software creates, plays and manages music stored in the MP3 format. MP3, short for MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, is a lossy compression format: it shrinks audio files by discarding sound information that the human ear is least likely to notice, guided by a model of how hearing works. This allows a song to occupy roughly a tenth of the space of the same recording stored uncompressed, which is why the format became central to digital music collections and portable players.

Creating an MP3 from a music disc involves two steps handled by dedicated tools. A CD ripper reads the digital audio tracks from a compact disc and copies them to the hard drive as exact, uncompressed data. An encoder then compresses that data into MP3, with the user choosing a bitrate that trades quality against file size: higher bitrates preserve more detail but produce larger files. Many programs combine these steps, ripping and encoding in one operation. General converters perform the related task of changing existing files between MP3 and other audio formats.

Once files exist, players decode and reproduce them, and software players are mirrored by hardware MP3 players that store and play the same files away from a computer. Supporting tools manage the metadata embedded in each file, the so-called tags that record the title, artist, album and track number used by players to organise a library. Much of this software is available as freeware and runs on Windows, including versions for Windows XP.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean that MP3 is lossy?
It means the format reduces file size by permanently discarding some audio detail judged hard to hear. The result sounds close to the original but is not an exact copy.
What does a CD ripper do?
It reads the audio tracks from a music CD and copies them onto a computer as data files, which can then be encoded into MP3 or another format.
What is bitrate in an MP3?
Bitrate is the amount of data used per second of audio. A higher bitrate keeps more detail and gives better quality, but makes the file larger.
